The Besnard Lakes
Four and a half stars
Eight sprawling tracks long, The Besnard Lakes’ first widely distributed album, Are the Dark Horse, was laboriously crafted together by Canadian super-producer Jace Lasek and his bass-toting wife, Olga Goreas. The Besnard Lakes’ sonically ambitious sophomore album features Brian Wilson-like vocals, endless layers of every instrument under the sun and brainy lyrics — the result being one of the most intense (and triumphant) albums of 2007.
