Piehl, a professor at Oklahoma State, says she examines the bourgeois world through a gender-queer perspective, an approach which has brought forth graphite drawings of flora and fauna that fall somewhere between John Audubon and Aubrey Beardsley, and photos of Japanese floating plants that gesture toward both the Romantic illustrations of Ernst Haeckle and nature films of Jean Painleve.
