The Cabaret at the Columbia Club, March 5-6
Amanda McBroom is an ever-blooming garden as a writer/interpreter of songs as self-contained stories. McBroom and accompanist Michelle Brourman set the standard for what you can expect to experience all season long at the newly installed Cabaret at the Columbia Club.
McBroom's rich, glowing contralto, sensitive, embracing personality and forthright, wholesome philosophy combined to deliver each song from the inside out and back in again. Brel requires the gamut from coy playfulness to shrill indictment and McBroom nailed it every time. Her interpretation of "Carousel" was impeccable. Her own compositions, while equally a microcosm of complicated experiences, are softer; humor is less biting, the lesson easier to swallow, and while the emotional base is feminine the vision is everybody's.
