Alonzo King's LINES Ballet with the Shaolin Monks of China

East is Kung Fu and Kung Fu ch'an and West is ballet and modern and miraculously the twain met in this masterful adaptation and adoption of cross current styles. An attentive, appreciative audience witnessed the monks performing with the same intensity as when they do their daily routines, and the LINES dancers performing with their desire to keep growing and developing individual and collective intuition as professionals through a variety of collaborations that is LINES' signature. The two-act program set to music opened with a prelude that emphasized the differences in technique and yet highlighted how the same instrument (the body) manipulates forms in space. Thirty pieces, seamlessly flowing into and out of each other, were an exercise in transcendence, leading to the finale with the full company moving effortlessly between styles.
