25th Anniversary Nutcracker

Three stars

Butler University Ballet; Clowes Memorial Hall;
Nov. 29-Dec. 2

A quieter, leaner, slower-paced, introspective, dreamy retelling featuring Tchaikovsky’s visceral score was witnessed Nov. 29 for the opening of the Nutcracker season in greater Indianapolis. Artistic Director Michelle Jarvis and Butler Ballet faculty, including Marek Cholewa, Stephan Laurent, Susan McGuire, Cynthia Pratt and Derek Reid, set choreography upon the strengths of the dancers and created a unified look that tended toward roundness and curves rather than the usual four-square and straight lines. Richard Auldon Clark conducted the Butler Symphony Orchestra and members of the Children’s Choir. Scenery from the Ruth Page production was donated by Chicago Tribune Charities.
