2007 Indiana renewable energy legislation needs your support

HB 1496, introduced by Reps. Dale Grubb (D-Covington) and Eric Koch (R-Bedford), would require that 10 percent of Indiana’s electricity come from renewable sources such as wind, solar and biomass. The bill is patterned after similar bills passed in 20 other states including Texas and Pennsylvania.

You can help to make an Indiana renewable electricity standard a reality. Despite all the benefits from renewable electricity, the bill faces a tough road at the Statehouse because the Indiana coal utilities are opposed to it.

ACTION Please contact your legislators and ask that they support an Indiana renewable electricity standard as called for in HB 1496. Reach your legislator at: House, 800-382-9841; Senate, 800-382-9467

Reasons to support an Indiana renewable electricity standard:

An Indiana renewable electricity standard is predicted to bring $6-$9 billion in economic investment to Indiana.

Producing electricity from renewable sources will reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and mercury and thus improve public health.

Developing renewable sources of electricity provides an economically beneficial way to address climate change.

Over 70 percent of the wind power built in the U.S. is in states with a renewable electricity standard. Indiana will not be able to take advantage of this multibillion dollar industry without one.

Twenty states have passed a renewable electricity standard including coal-producing states such as Pennsylvania, Colorado and Texas.

Farmers are paid between $4,000-$9,000 for each wind turbine on their property, and the turbines only take up one acre of land.
