There were many things I liked about 12
and some I didn't. The film is a Russian remake of Sidney Lumet's classic 12 Angry Men
, about a jury debating the fate of a young man accused of murdering his father. Both movies take place almost entirely in the jury room (in this case a gymnasium). This version works, but it gets long when it delves into the accused's past, with flashbacks of war and chaos that really seem superfluous. Another problem: The film's white subtitles are thin and not outlined, making several scenes hard to read, especially during an important monologue spoken by someone in a white shirt, along with some black and white sequences. This marred my ability to enjoy the production. At Landmark's Keystone Art Cinema.
