The title of this show refers to the men and women depicted in the antique photographs that appear in Elkins’ collages. Subjects in these Victorian-era photos have a stately seriousness that Elkins mocks. In a number of works there’s text. “Abby’s April arrest for abducting chicks in Arkansas astounded her friends and family” is the phrase lettered on a collage with a photo of a young woman on a backdrop that consists of an old map and an illustration of a chicken. “Lettuce Alone” depicts the photo of a young couple and a separate photo of a woman involved in a love triangle with said couple. Illustrations of heads of lettuce here are juxtaposed with the word “ALONE” printed in block letters. You might find yourself enjoying the humor here. Many of these works might also strike you as hodgepodges, however, that don’t add much conceptually to their reductive textural content and titles. Of course, it’s true enough that the subjects of these photos weren’t all saints. But they weren’t all strumpets and squares either.
