If you step into HopCat during Burger Week looking for some Crack Fries and a Local 30 draft, you’re going to want to order HopCat’s Burger Week burger.

“I want everyone to look at this and say, ‘This is the best five dollar burger that could ever exist,’” said HopCat general manager AJ Hunt.

This patty is cooked order and topped with pepperjack cheese, jalapenos, onion rings, bacon and a knife. “You’ll want to cut this baby,” L.J. said. He was right, I couldn’t wrap my mouth around this mile-high burger. Take one bite of this Burger Week burger and you’ll taste everything you’ve ever thought could be in a burger in the best way.

Don’t forget a side of the award-winning Crack Fries (there’s not really crack in them, I asked, but honestly they’re so good I would not be suprised) and some beer cheese, your favorite Local 30 brew and you’re ready to have an amazing meal for under $15.

Dead and Company Concert

Dead and Company, consisting of three Grateful Dead members along with John Mayer, Bill Kreutzmann and Oteil Burbridge, played at Klipsch Music Center this past Friday. The Grateful Dead has not played at what used to be known as Deer Creek since 1995, so this was a very big deal for Indianapolis. Crowds gathered outside of the venue on Shakedown Street where venders were selling goods like tie dye shirts, hat pins, Jerry Rolls, stones, and much more.

Burger Week: Broad Ripple Brewpub’s "Scotch Egg Burger"

Broad Ripple Brewpub is one of 35+ restaurants participating in Indy Burger Week

This piece is the first installment in a series of posts that will highlight the burgers and chefs participating in Indy Burger Week from June 20-26.

The words brew pub might just sound like “bar” to the average joe but Burger Week participant Broad Ripple Brewpub is an English-style establishment that brews and serves its own ale. The pub is snug in the center of Broad Ripple, 842 E. 65th St. Indianapolis, IN 46220, but general manager Billy Hannan says the restaurant roots from England.

Owner John Hill decided to channel his English roots and open what is now the oldest brewery Indiana, said Hannan, but Hill didn’t stop at the booze. He also introduced Scotch Eggs.

“Scotch Eggs are hard-boiled, wrapped in sausage, breaded, deep fried and served with ranch dressing,” Hannan said, “It’s actually an English food but it’s named after the Scotch because they love anything high in fat.”

Hannan decided to explore trendy burgers and came up with the idea that a Scotch Egg Burger would be popular. The burger has gained a following, which is why he choose it for burger week.

The Scotch Egg Burger

graphic.png
The patty is a mixture of locally grown beef and sausage which is breaded, then deep fried. The patty is topped with a fried egg and served on a toasted bun with a side of ranch. I didn’t know what to expect when I sank my teeth into the mysterious deal, but it tasted like perfect hangover food. No need to stop at Denny’s get your breakfast burger right here in the pub.

If you’re going to have the Scotch Egg Burger, you need to try the English-style chips (yes, that means fries). Drizzle ketchup and malt vinegar on the 8-spice seasoned fries and give it a munch. Trust me, it’s good.

Since you’re in a pub, you’ll want to order Brewpub’s own ESB, English Style Bitter, to wash down this burger.

Burger Week: Between the Bun’s 'It's Nacho Burger'

Between the Bun is one of 35+ restaurants participating in Indy Burger Week

This piece is the first installment in a series of posts that will highlight the burgers and chefs participating in Indy Burger Week from June 20-26.

The rustic brick buildings and tall, hanging trees elicit a pretty good sense of what Greenwood was like in 1861. Old Town Greenwood is brimming with local businesses and a nostalgic, old charm. But Between the Bun, located on 102 S. Madison, brings you burgers that are anything but old.

Self-proclaimed food perfectionist, Scott Sims, works to bring a new burger creation to the restaurant every few months. He began this line of work while grilling at his pool with his buddies.

“My friends kept telling me I should sell the burgers,” Sims said, “So I did.”

It's Nacho Burger

When I saw the cheese melt on this burger, my heart melted with it. This hand crafted, hand seasoned burger is delivered with the bun to the side so you can see exactly what you’re getting – a hefty, half pound patty cooked on the grill with seasoning and sauce that Sims came up with himself.

Next, he adds the Doritos, shredded cheddar jack cheese, diced onions and jalapenos. To me, it tastes like the burgers Dad would grill up on the forth of July mixed with that side of spice I crave.

Dan Wakefield Park Dedication

Today, the 61st and Broadway Park was renamed Dan Wakefield Park, an internationally known author and screen play writer. It is very rare that a park is named after someone who is living, so this event was a big deal to the Indianapolis community. Senator Lugar and Wakefield's other childhood and long term friends came into town for this special ceremony in dedication to Dan Wakefield.
