If their new single is any indication, The Born Again Floozies may be born once again.
“Get Up and Shout,” as its title suggests, retains The Floozies’ hosanna trademarks: mirthful, busker spirit and spiritual, allusive lyrics, to name two. Likewise, guitarist Joey Welch’s piano-style approach to his instrument is still intact, as is the itinerant horn section.
The most notable difference is in the rhythm section. Far from The Floozies’ signature tap-dance-on-wood approach, the beats on “Get Up and Shout” sound positively modern, rather like trip-hop. It doesn’t sound contrived or disingenuous, however. If anything, the combination should attract new fans while retaining old ones.
The band traveled to L.A. last month to shoot a video for “Get Up and Shout” with up-and-coming film director Fabien Martorell, who recently won an award at the Sundance Film Festival. Both the single and video will be released May 1 through Triple R Records. It will be available on iTunes and other major download sites.
