Wizard of Oz directed by Eddie Curry
by Lisa Gauthier May 23, 2007

Four stars

Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre

This is really a top-notch rendition of the classic tale. Casting is so spot-on it seems inevitable. Tiana Checchia as Dorothy performs one of the purest and non-saccharine renditions of “Over the Rainbow” I have ever heard. With Toto (director Eddie Curry’s incredibly cute and obliging dog Gracie) in tow, she is believable as a little girl without bleeding into affected. Bobbi Bates and Lynne Perkins go head to head as Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West, respectively. Perkins really has that cackle down perfectly. The trio of Doug King, Michael Hoagland and Ty Stover are meant to be as Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion. Ron Morgan’s choreography is especially well-done for “The Jitterbug.” And while B&B is known for breaking the fourth wall, this production is all over the auditorium, which brings a depth of immersion not normally experienced in a show. Through July 1; 317-872-9664.
