Without taxpayer money
It’s a shame that there seems to be a growing divide between the sheltering system (IACC and HSI) and the many individuals and groups that give so generously of their own resources to help our communities (Cover, “Saving the Strays,” April 16-23). IndyFeral was recognized by the City County Council in 2007 for having reduced the burden on taxpayers by many thousands of dollars through their effective trap/neuter/return program. Fewer feral cats meant a reduction in the cat population coming into IACC and HSI. All of this was done without a penny of taxpayer money. Groups like SNSI, FACE, FIDO and Indy Pit Crew (to name just a few) actively seek out responsible low-income pet owners and give them resources to care for and neuter their pets. The positive impact on our community is significant and, again, no tax dollars are used. These ordinary citizens are rolling up their sleeves, giving up their weekends, pounding the pavement, educating neighborhood groups, donating money and supplies, and occasionally exhausting themselves in order to make a difference in our community. All without benefit of a paycheck or political clout for their efforts. They deserve better from the people whose jobs are being done for them. It’s not IACC’s fault that it is underfunded. Indianapolis taxpayers need to support a better facility and better training for the staff. As for HSI — caveat emptor — you may find that your charitable dollars go further with an organization less focused on bureaucracy and more focused on serving people and animals.
