Tuesday night, the fine students of the Butler Recording Club are going to harness the raw power of rock ’n’ roll to grant the dream of a 5-year-old terminally ill girl from Shelbyville, raising money to send her and her family to Disney World in late April. The club, which gives students hands-on experience in various aspects of the music industry, is teaming up with the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund, putting on a concert at Butler’s Atherton Union Reilly Room with local hotshots The Elms, Mars or the Moon and The Working Hour.

The boys in The Elms have been burning up the road over the past few years, playing a rawer, purer brand of heartland rock after years spent in the tightly regimented Christian music world. Their sound has been catching on nationwide, leading to increased expectations.

This year, The Elms will tour Europe for the first time and release their second post-CCM album. I spoke with bandleader Owen Thomas, who was in Nashville working on the as-yet-untitled album.

“The songs on this record are very melodic, a bit less raw than the last record,” Thomas said. “The tunes are much grander. We’ve been working in the studio since the fall, and this gig is a good thing. We’re dying to get back on stage. The live element is the most important part of this for us, it’s just such good fun.

“This will give us a chance to play a few new songs,” Thomas continued. “We’ll do ‘A Miracle,’ which is a new digital single we’re giving away free at our Web site, TheElms.net. We’ll also be debuting ‘Back To Indiana,’ and ‘This Is How the World Will End,’ which is possibly our finest moment yet.” He pauses and chuckles. “It’s large.”
