Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins
by Ed Johnson-Ott Jun 18, 2008

Two and a half stars (PG-13)

Martin Lawrence’s latest is a Tyler Perry movie without Tyler Perry, mixing broadly-drawn characters, saucy comedy and some slapstick with a dose of melodrama. The story follows talk-show host R.J. Stevens (Lawrence) as he gets guilt-tripped into returning to his hometown in the Deep South for the 50th wedding anniversary celebration of his parents (James Earl Jones and Margaret Avery) with his son Jamaal (Damani Roberts) and highly ambitious girlfriend, Survivor winner Bianca Kittles (Joy Bryant) in tow. The movie is sloppy, but modestly entertaining. 114 minutes. DVD INFO: Two separately packaged DVDs are available. One preserves the film in the anamorphic widescreen format, while the other hacks off nearly a third of the feature for the fullscreen (aka pan & scan) version. Shop carefully. Both versions include a commentary track, interviews, 45 minutes of outtakes and deleted scenes, an alternate ending, a music video and featurettes.

I can affirm that the exhibition offers much to savor, in addition to a gift shop the likes of which you’ve never tasted. It offers history and lore...
