Taylor Swift’s spirited performance of her latest single “Should’ve Said No” at this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards show realized an idea she first had in middle school.

Dressed in jeans and a hoodie, Swift sang the first verse of the song seated with an acoustic guitar. The performance kicked into high gear when Swift tossed the guitar off stage, stripped off the jeans and hoodie and performed the rest of the song in a black dress. Swift sang the last verse of the song under a cascading waterfall.

“I’ve always wanted to perform an angry song and have water rain down from the ceiling and have a little freakout on stage,” Swift admits. “I’ve always wanted to do that.”

In the two years since its release, Swift’s self-titled debut CD has sold over 3 million copies, generated four Top 10 singles and helped her land gigs opening for the likes of George Strait, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

As she did with her first CD, Swift will be drawing from her collection of original songs for her sophomore album, due to be released later this year.

“There are songs that I wrote when I was 13 that I think are perfect to bring out now,” Swift says. “There’s so much stuff that I’m going to pull from the back drawer and then there’s some stuff that I will write today and cut tomorrow.”

Through it all, Swift has been able to maintain a level-headed approach to her career and her fame.

“I am a strong believer that if you work your entire life for something, and you want this one thing so much you should never complain once you get it.”
