Northwestern bohemians Portugal the Man unquestionably exist in their own state of mind.

The trio transmits a delectable ’60s psychedelia that encourages dancing on their CD, “Church Mouth.” It’s a sound that simply won’t quit. Propulsive beats, grungy tones and ramshackle vocal choruses are common threads throughout, but each song stands on its own.

The highlights are many: the delusive quality of “Sugar Cinnamon,” the muddy sunshine of “My Mind,” the blues of “Bellies Are Full,” the delta soul of “Children” and the head-tripping funk of “The Bottom.”

The political and religious themes espoused on “Church Mouth” may be too esoteric for some, but it’s the music that’s the draw here. Keep an ear out for Portugal the Man. Both ultra hip and conventional, they’re taking the best elements of underground rock and making them their own.
