Multiple Grammy-winning vocal ensemble The New York Voices is renowned for its innovative approach to jazz group vocals.

Darmon Meader founded NYV 20 years ago, and still wears many hats in the group: music director, arranger, composer, producer, saxophonist and vocalist. He says he thrives as a multitasker.

“It’s always been in my personality,” said Meader, speaking from his New Jersey home. “Early on in my musical development, I always loved to play and I loved to sing; I just never really wanted to decide to be one or the other.”

NYV’s sound and philosophy has changed over the years.

“It’s an evolving thing, it’s shifted over the years,” Meader said. “I guess it’s changed dramatically, and it’s definitely evolved in the sense when I look back at our early days. I think we have matured over the years when we shifted from five voices to four.”

Those four voices are Kim Nazarian, Peter Eldridge, Laura Kinhan and Meader. There have only been two vocal changes in the group’s history; everyone but Kinhan is an original member.

The New York Voices’ latest CD, “A Day Like This,” is riding high on national jazz charts, and Darmon Meader just released his first CD, “And So Am I,” which showcases his saxophone prowess.
