Los Lonely Boys, Los Lobos

On a hot night of Texican and Tex-Mex rock ’n’ roll, “The Brotherhood Tour” featuring Los Lonely Boys and Los Lobos rocked the Egyptian Room for nearly three and a half hours.

Los Lobos opened the evening with a 70-minute set that mixed rock, R&B and Spanish polka. Highlights included Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away,” a terrific cover of the Allman Brothers’ “One Way Out” and their biggest hit, a rousing cover of Richie Valens’ “La Bamba” (that segued into “Good Love”). Los Lobos put on a show that primed the 1,000-plus in attendance for the evening’s headliner.

Henry Garza, Los Lonely Boys’ guitarist, has said that he and his brothers JoJo and Ringo Jr. were influenced by Los Lobos. And throughout their one hour and 45-minute headline set, Los Lonely Boys paid tribute to Los Lobos and several of their other musical heroes in fine fashion.

Opening with several tracks from their new CD “Forgiven,” Los Lonely Boys kept up the momentum throughout their show, highlighted by a 22-minute jam session that gave each member of the band the opportunity to strut their stuff for the very appreciative audience. Henry Garza seemed to channel Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan with his mesmerizing guitar playing during this extended jam.

Just as they joined Los Lobos for the last two songs of their set, Los Lonely Boys invited members of the band from East L.A. to sit in for the final two songs of their show, a blazing rendition of Steve Winwood’s “I’m A Man” and their first hit song, “Heaven.”
