Monday, April 14, Butler University will host a free show featuring Ugandan rapper Krukid to benefit Ambassadors for Children and raise money to build a school in Uganda.

Krukid, born Edwin Ruyonga, is gifted with a sharp flow and wit as well as a welcome sense of humor, and strives to be a voice for his people. His songs cover such subject matter as American-African pride (“African”) and what it’s like to be forced to serve as a child soldier at the age of 8 (“Invisible”).

Before moving to the United States, Krukid gained fame in Uganda, winning national competitions and picking up radio play as well as using the Internet to build an international following. Krukid has kept the momentum building, recently touring with Lupe Fiasco, and playing a concert with The Roots in the past week.

Krukid was recently chosen for the Rawkus 50. Rawkus, the famed record label that launched the careers of artists like Mos Def and Talib Kweli, signed 50 top underground emcees around the planet for a simultaneous digital release.

Hip-hop continues to have a global impact through benefits like the Krukid show, which is being organized by Butler University and Ambassadors for Children. 

Ambassadors for Children is an international organization that builds sustainable projects such as schools, clinics and libraries around the planet. Attendees are encouraged to make a donation to the program, which will send a group of Butler students to the Wakiso District of Kampala, Uganda, to help build a school in an area where over 330,000 children have no school to attend. Meeting the goal of $35,000 will fund building a school with eight rooms, a kitchen, toilets, and a soccer field, providing nearly 350 children of Uganda with educational opportunities.
