It’s a great problem to have: With Indy finally riding the wave of sustainability, monitoring the burgeoning list of programs, meetings and initiatives related to environmental issues is a full-time job.

Enter aGreenerIndy.org. Launched in late April, the Web site is a gift to the city from the Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning’s Indianapolis Center (CAP:IC), already known as a facilitator of productive dialogue about the built environment in Indianapolis. AGreenerIndy.org is one-stop shopping for new and seasoned enviros looking to get in the loop, trade opinions and get involved in Indy’s green movement.

“We hope the site makes it a lot easier to point people to different groups, and each other,” says Scott Truex, CAP:IC’s director. “The point is to make it easy to participate.” The common calendar will help groups see who has scheduled what when: “Not just so scheduling conflicts can be avoided,” Truex says, “but so organizations can collaborate by pooling resources or sharing audiences.”

It might seem odd that a Muncie-based university would invest so much in Indianapolis. With its new storefront location at 50 S. Meridian complete with meeting facilities and a bookstore, CAP:IC has positioned itself as a resource hub for a common agenda around sustainable development. “The Indianapolis Center allows us to offer an immersive teaching laboratory, extend the impact of visiting experts in the field and stay connected to Ball State alums,” Truex says.

As an educational tool, aGreenerIndy.org features a listserv, discussion forums and a nimble search engine. Individuals can post to the forums without a password. Organizational reps can register and get access to the calendar and news-posting functions. While not intended as a marketplace for green products, aGreenerIndy.org is a means for greening Indianapolis that’s right on time, in the wake of the mayor’s Indy GreenPrint plan. “The ship,” Truex says, “is moving forward.”
