Freekbass’ live DVD release party
Spin Nightclub
Friday, July 20, 9 p.m., $6, 21+

Freekbass, the protégé of the legendary funk bass artist Bootsy Collins (who performed with James Brown and made numerous contributions of his own to the funk genre), has released his own DVD experience, “A Sliver of Shiver.” Close-ups, pans and long shots provide a front row (or back row) seat to the show that allows you to see the sweat on the performers’ brows and the collegiate crowd dancing freely. And this weekend, you can experience “the funk” live.

The genre itself has many fun elements that’ll get you in the groove. The constant emphasis on beat one makes for an immediately unique sound and provides a distinctive feeling, and frontlining with the bassist really adds a vivid twist. Bass lines tend to vamp heavy and often, and this becomes a dominant feature when the bass is used as the lead instrument. The powerful, rhythmic groove created puts the listener into a cool, relaxed mindset that is pure relaxation.

Freekbass is the name of the band, as well as the persona of bass player/lead singer Chris Sherman, who hails from Cincinnati, Ohio. The group is known for live shows that spark memories of the showmanship side of funk’s past. Sherman performs in a glitzy, downy red coat, a black cowboy hat and sunglasses that reminisce of the capes, glam and glitz of big funk-rock shows from years past.

Freekbass adds his own zest to the genre with elements of hip-hop, R&B, soul, rap and rock fused together to create an addictive, high-energy romp. Watch his fingers as he plays. They bounce lightly and effortlessly on the vibrating strings, which seems impossible as the music from his uniquely designed bass churns and crackles swiftly. The musical elements blend together seamlessly and cohesively with Josh Knarr on guitar and Chip Wilson on drums. After a cowbell solo that shows off his percussion skills and an ending that funks out, a jam session concludes the concert on the group’s live DVD with Collins, Buckethead on guitar and Animal Crackers on turntables joining in the mix.

Don’t forego the chance to see this group perform. See the live version, and then go home and watch the special features on the DVD from the comfort of your couch.
