It's been a busy year for Indianapolis-based Everthus the Deadbeats — they’ve released their second album, John Kill & The Microscopic Lullaby; embarked on a three-week spring trek in support of the record; headlined a showcase at SXSW; and played Indianapolis eight times — a number drummer Dan Fahrner was uncomfortable with.
“It gets to the point where people see you so much it creates a dip in attendance,” Fahrner said. “People start thinking, ‘Well, I saw them already, I’ll wait until next time.’”
So what's next?
A carnival.
When drummer Dan Fahrner decided to scale the band's Indianapolis operations back, he wanted to do so with an “event rather than a concert.”
The resulting show, The Super Magic Carnival Prom, ties The Deadbeats circus freak-on-acid sound to a magic show, sword swallowers, jugglers and tarot readers — bringing a slice of the circus to the Spin Nightclub. But it also serves as a way to rejuvenate the band before their summer-long tour of the United States.
“It kind of goes along with the improvisational and unique aspect of the band,” Fahrner said. “Hopefully, the audience will participate.”
To help with the magic aspect of the Super Magic Carnival Prom, Fahrner tapped magician A.J. Facco, who recently lent his hands to Kanye West’s video for “Magic Hands.”
“Expect to laugh and be amazed at the same time,” Facco said. “It’s definitely original magic, meant to expose people to the more artistic side of magic.”
Facco, who tends bar in Chicago and normally books corporate gigs, kids parties and rock shows, said his set will be geared towards “rowdy, inebriated folks.” He’ll also incorporate visuals and spoken word poetry into his act.
Sword-swallower Clint Walker will perform, but Fahrner’s attempt to bring fire-breathers to the close confines of Spin Nightclub failed.
“I protested, but they wouldn’t let me,” Fahrner said.
