Once, some years back, I was at an in-store show at Indy CD & Vinyl, when a couple of CDs crashed to the ground. Apparently it wasn’t the first time, as one of the employees commented, “That’s been happening all night. And not just all over the store  — just this one spot. There’s gotta be something about this spot. I’m not saying it’s a psychoactive phenomenon or anything. I’m just saying there’s something weird about the vibes right here.”

“Such power and passion!” his comrade remarked. “Coming right out of the CDs!”

Power and passion, indeed. About 200 in-store concerts after its inception, Indy CD & Vinyl is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a massive in-store show featuring eight bands from a wide array of genres: Stereo Deluxe, ESW, Kaiton, Dorsey, Spud Puppies, Twilight Sentinels, Wolfy and Mablab. Plus, there will be prizes and food all day, not to mention a 20-percent-off-everything sale.

In-store concerts have been a staple of the store’s appeal since the beginning. “I just like presenting bands, turning people onto new and good music,” says co-owner Rick Zeigler. “I attribute the success to my employees, first and foremost: their and my extensive knowledge of a variety of genres.”

That variety will be on display Saturday, and intentionally so: “I’m going for very diverse music, mirroring the diversity of our inventory: rock, jazz, bluegrass, hip-hop, electronica,” Zeigler says.
