After listening to the self-titled debut from Carter’s Chord, it’s easy to understand why country music superstar Toby Keith said, “As soon as I saw these girls perform, I knew they had to be on [my label] Show Dog.”

Becky Robertson, the oldest of the three sisters that make up the group Carter’s Chord, says that she and her siblings — Emily and Joanna —appreciate Keith’s belief in their musical talents.

“He totally gets it,” Becky says. “He’s been at the bottom, the top and everywhere in between in this business. Toby is very much a hands-on label owner and producer, but he has also given us a lot of creative control.”

The sisters have been exposed to music their whole lives. Their parents, Barny and Carter Robertson, toured and recorded with Waylon Jennings during country music’s “outlaw movement.”

“Our house was like a music conservatory,” Becky says. “Someone was always playing music or writing a song. Once [our parents] saw this was something that we really wanted, they’ve been extremely supportive. There’s no way we could have done this without them.”

The girls’ CD, produced by Keith and Barny Robertson, was released digitally on June 17. With the help of country radio, MySpace and YouTube, Carter’s Chord has seen their fan base continue to grow.

The group is also finding exposure as one of the opening acts for Toby Keith’s summer tour. Robertson acknowledges that “it’s been a lot of fun,” but she quickly adds that having only 10 minutes on stage “doesn’t give us a lot of time to make a big impression on the audience. But we go out there and give it our all because it’s our music and our career.”
