War Memorial walking-tonglen
I read your NUVO article “Dick Cheney at the War Memorial” (Hoppe, Nov. 7-14). There are so many of your articles that I love and have always wanted to respond — but apparently this is the one that finally made me do so.
It was just two years ago that I happened to discover what was inside and at the top of the War Memorial. Your story of how you, Melli and your son took that “inner” walk reminded me of my first time of discovery. Since then, if I am not out and about teaching and I find myself downtown at our office — AND get a chance to take a walk — I attempt to always go to the top of the monument.
From here, I attempt to do walking meditation — much like Buddhists circumambulate around Chortans and Stupas. It is my way of doing what the Buddhist call Tonglen (taking in suffering and sending out healing and peace).
Your article reminds me that perhaps I need to get some “War Memorial walking-tonglen” done in the very near future. Thank you so much for going to this event, and for your writing that helps keep all of our minds open and our hearts listening!
