Voltaire review
Welcome to the world of Voltaire, singer/comedian/animator/comic book writer and general Renaissance man. With a top hat jauntily perched upon his head (and just a little bit toasted, which always makes for a good start), he sang the praises of the Victorian aesthetic, made fun of Rammstein while using Rammstein’s own riffs, played a highly adult-rated Star Wars parody and managed to work in a few jabs at Ball State for the last time he was here and got kicked out because security didn’t feel like keeping the concert hall open any longer, so he played in the parking lot, instead. This time was mercilessly free of eviction, so the audience was treated to the full effect of Voltaire’s gentle prodding and relentless showmanship.
Incidentally, afterwards, my wife (the world’s biggest Voltaire fan) approached him and talked about how much she loved his music, especially the vaguely dark and disturbing, yet empowering, lullaby he wrote for his son, and how she sings it to our own son every night.
“That must instill terror in his heart!” Voltaire said.
“Are you kidding?” we replied. “This kid sleeps through haunted houses!” (True). Equally true to form, Voltaire was the first and only person to correctly identify the origin of my son’s name, Armand Zefram Pogue. (Bonus points and no prize to the first person that emails me with the answer. No googling allowed!)
