The featured artists in this show — Jason Myers, Ben Freeman and Jorge Marin — are united by their interest in the human form. Indy painter Myers uses deeply textured layers of oil-based paint to form his somewhat abstract human figures against chaotic backgrounds. Some backdrops contain clouds of upper case letters as jumbled and fluid as our streams of consciousness. Freeman uses collage as a foundation for mixed media portraits of iconic Hollywood females from the ’30s and ’40s. Then there’s his portrait of three young girls set on a backdrop of multiple peepshow photos from the ’50s. Does Freeman suggest here that the destinations of these girls, when they grow up, are the strip clubs of Hollywood? Elsewhere in the gallery, sculptor Marin brings small-scale nude figures to life in bronze with incredible precision. In “Luisa En Balsa Con Bandera,” the figure of a woman, nude save for a bird-beak mask, is holding a flag as she heads forth in a canoe to provinces that we can only imagine.
