With corn on pace to reach $8 a bushel, the attraction of ethanol as an alternative to gasoline continues to dim. VeraSun Energy, which owns one ethanol plant in Linden, has shelved plans to build three more — including one in Reynolds, the town famously dubbed “Biotown” a few years back. With corn prices not expected to drop any time soon, there’s a renewed interest making fuel from non-food materials like switchgrass.
