Thumbsdown: Clean coal is a dirty word
by Editors Aug 29, 2007

Indy resident Matt Shull will be riding his bicycle to Bloomington today (Wednesday) to attend the public hearing for Duke Energy’s plan to build a new coal-fired power plant. This “clean coal” plant will increase emissions: Can Indiana or the Earth take on more pollution? See www.citact.org for more on the hearing; see upcoming NUVOs for coverage.

Until everyone that uses electricity is willing to pay several times more per kilowatt-hour, utilities will continue to build generation facilities that burn coal. It's cheap and plentiful in the U.S. and today accounts for over 90% of electric generation in Indiana. Federal legislation that limits emissions (and associates a cost with those emissions) is the only way to force utilities to find alternative sources of energy. Either way, the end result will be higher electric bills. I wish the citizens of this country would accept this fact, so that utilities could move on and start generating electricity in a sustainable way.

clean coal ????
by ld59 | Aug 29, 2007

Coal is dirty by nature, was put in the ground for a reason. We should leave it there !! The coal operators are in it for money ONLY. They have no concern of the damage it does to people near the mines or the damage it does to the roads WE PAY FOR. There is no clean coal, there is no safe mine or plants !! Clean coal in an oxymoron !!! Coal, like money, rules Indiana.

I can affirm that the exhibition offers much to savor, in addition to a gift shop the likes of which you’ve never tasted. It offers history and lore...
