Thumbs down: Some celebration
by Editors Jul 16, 2008

They called it a celebration, but the ribbon-cutting ceremony in Evansville to mark the beginning of construction for the I-69 extension was a private party organized to insulate concrete-pouring big wigs from any whiff of protest. The new-terrain route being “celebrated” not only ignores an existing route, but will wreck 7,000 acres of forest and farmland and is underfunded by at least $2 billion.

The existing route you mention would cost too much to use due to all the businesses and houses that would have to be purchased to expand highway 41 into an interstate route. Highway 41 also goes through two protected historical districts in Evansville. These are only two of the many reasons the new route was chosen. Years have gone into researching the best route that will minimize cost and harm to the environment, while connecting Evansville to the rest of the state.
