The guys in Indianapolis-based new wave-rock-dance mavens Thin Fevers have been around the music scene in one form or another for quite some time, and formed their current band in 2005. Antonio Leiriao (vocals), Ben Traub (drums), Brian Wyrick (guitar) and Matt Chandler (bassist until recently) raced through production of their second EP, New Systems, before Chandler’s recent move to New York.

With Travis Hawkins stepping in as full-time bassist, the band will perform this weekend at Big Car as a release party for the EP, closing the first night of Oakland artist Nat Russell’s “Thing” solo show. New Systems is available as a 100-copy, limited-edition boxed set with CD and T-shirt for $20, or downloadable for free from Wyrick’s site at rockitbomb.com. The EP also includes a copy of their video “Idiot Archipelago.”

NUVO: How did the production of New Systems come about?

Brian Wyrick: We had these really great songs we’d been writing with Chandler on bass, and realized we really needed to put this stuff out while we had the chance. It’s a testament to how much a band can do on their own — we recorded and produced the entire thing ourselves. We recorded at the Irving Theatre with our friend Nathan Cook as engineer, and recorded, mixed and produced the whole thing on eight tracks to Apple’s Garage Band.

NUVO: Plenty of great work has certainly come from DIY under deadline pressure! How do you feel about the final product?

Wyrick: It was really kind of a rush recording, but it really captured where we were at as a band. We didn’t over-think anything.
