This Saturday, you might change your mind about pop.

Out of Detroit, Mich., the Singles are unlike anything you’ll hear out of your neighbor’s garage. “We’re heavier than, say, The Beatles,” vocalist and guitarist Vince Frederick says. Although the Beatles did influence them, for the Singles, pop music is the Tootsie Roll center and the candy shell is rock and roll. Their sound is blanketed with power guitar while pop keeps them steady with a happy beat.

As founder of the Singles, Frederick makes this his only musical endeavor. “A lot of musicians have so many projects going on,” Frederick says. “That’s no way to take something to the next level.” The Singles are currently promoting their latest album, Start Again, produced by Jim Diamond, engineer for the White Stripes.

Indy’s Extra Blue Kind has a candy shell less proportionate to its pop center. Their loud crunch lets the essence of rock reign supreme, but the pop is there. The band is still promoting their latest album, The Tide and The Undertow, produced by Zero Boys’ Vess Ruhtenburg. “We were studio ghouls for a long time,” says frontman P. David Hazel. “For the industry to take you seriously, you have to hit the road.”
