The racist agenda
by Letter to the Editor Mar 14, 2007

Evangelicals and Advance America claim their religion and values are under attack but it is Advance America that has declared war on everyone else (Cover, “Evangelical Lobbyist Eric Miller,” March 7-14)! Their leader, Eric Miller, insists, “Banning same-sex marriages and civil unions will prove to be the greatest moral battle of this generation” It is ironic that for all their talk about the value of human life and the evils of homosexuality, Advance America never speaks against the real evil and loss of life being inflicted by the U.S. military occupation of Iraq. Nor do they dare speak of the imperialist oppression of non-white peoples worldwide.

Still, there is one thing that Advance America gets right: this country is in the midst of a deep moral crisis. We are indeed living in an age when politics as business-as-usual is unconscionable. It is no wonder that people are searching for meaning and morality with the war crimes of the Bush Administration thus the increase in mega churches and the support of right-wing Christian organizations dedicated to securing a Christian theocracy.

The truth is that people won’t find morality in opposing same-sex marriage or gay rights. They won’t find morality in rounding up undocumented immigrants, separating them from their families and sending them back across the border or to “detention facilities.” They won’t find morality in preserving the traditional American family way of life.

This is the racist agenda being reinforced by Eric Miller and Advance America. If Hoosiers start thinking for themselves and believing in the freewill of the human spirit rather than taking every word in the Bible literally then we may survive as a civilization. Laura McPhee’s excellent article is indeed a warning if we don’t stop the Christian fascists from taking over our government.

Call 'em names
by Mark | Mar 15, 2007

That's it. Call 'em names. You'll feel better and that's what is important. Never mind that the word Racist didn't begin to appear in the dictionary before 30 years ago. Never mind that the misuse of the word Fascist is pandemic among the great unwashed (leftists). "Advance America never speaks against the real evil and loss of life being inflicted by the U.S. military occupation of Iraq." The last time I checked, Americans chose their own political agendas. These people are working on the state level against a current issue where they may actually make a difference. They are wise to choose their battles carefully. "Nor do they dare speak of the imperialist oppression of non-white peoples worldwide." FACT ALERT... the most discriminated group in THIS country is the young, single WHITE male. Most discriminated against is housing, lending AND more likely to become a victim of a hate crime. So buck up, cry baby. You've actually got it pretty good.
