On Friday, Feb. 29, also known as Leap Day ’08, four spirited indie rock bands will take the Melody Inn stage starting at 9 p.m.

Indianapolis indie-rockers Red Queen Hypothesis and Columbus, Ohio, hard-rockers Lollipop Factory will be joined for this bonus-day show by Harley Poe and The Language.

Harley Poe — Kevin Phillips (bass), Joe Whiteford (guitar, vocals), Gregg Manfred (keys) and Christian Riquelme (snare) — sound a little like the playful 1983-vintage Violent Femmes. Think “Add It Up” and “Gone Daddy Gone” but with a tongue-in-cheek affinity for B-movie darkness that brings to mind The Cramps. Led by former Calibretto frontman and soon-to-be father Whiteford, this Standard Recording Co. band is, according to Phillips, “touring down to Austin, Texas,” playing a handful of shows “before it’s baby time for Joe.”

While still riding the buzz of their 2007 split release with Dead Vampires, after “baby time,” Harley Poe will start chipping away at a new album. “Joe writes the songs, records a demo and makes us copies,” Phillips explains. “[The next] album is going to be pretty full — lots of trumpet from me. Lots of things happening.”

The Language, likewise, will have the tall task of recording a new album on their minds when they take the Melody Inn stage, likely slipping their latest material into their set-list as much as possible. Known for their energetic live shows, The Language formed in 2004 with members Ryan Koch (vocals, drums), Luka Raykovich (vocals, percussion), Nathan Gray (bass) and Joe Harrison (guitars).

“We’re about to release a six-song disc,” the band explained. “And we are currently rehearsing a set of 15 songs, preparing to record a new album that will be recorded mostly live.”
