Templeton and Quade: together
by Editors Aug 29, 2007

Once upon a time in Indianapolis, there was an old building called the Faris, a great box of a place with massive banks of checkerboard windows on every floor affording great views of the city at night and a wealth of natural light by day. The Faris was full of artists’ studios and a scene for great parties and intense conversation. Lois Templeton and Robert Quade made art there — paintings and sculpture, respectively — and mounted shows together called Gestures and Gestures II. Along with six other artists, they created a happening called “One Afternoon,” a Sunday of impromptu art accompanied by Frank Glover’s jazz ensemble.

The Faris building is long gone, but, happily for Indianapolis, Templeton and Quade are in fine form, renewing their collaboration and conversation with In a Quiet Place, a three-day communion that everyone is invited to join in. Both of these local icons will have new work on display, but, best of all, both will be on hand, engaged and engaging in the art of conversation, holding an open forum for the discussion of creative experience, the artistic process and how we communicate through language and art. Expect neither jargon nor fluff at this get-together, but real talk born of life experience. Templeton and Quade are those rare creative individuals: so sophisticated you don’t have to be an arts major to understand what they’re about. Life is their subject, art is how they tackle it.

In a Quiet Place opens next Thursday, Sept. 6 in Murphy Art Center Studio 204B from 6-10 p.m. and continues on Friday, Sept. 7 (also 6-10 p.m.) and Saturday, Sept. 8 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, call 317-885-7037.
