A recent U.S. Art article on Becky Hall Fehsenfeld entitled “25 Artists You Should Know More About” brought the local artist/gallery owner into a national light.

As part of her artistic process, Fehsenfeld spends many months of the year traveling to Europe and Asia. Recent trips have taken her to France, Germany, China, Greece and many parts of Africa. She utilizes these newfound perspectives in order to create pieces that are fusions of her experiences and each cultural style. Her works range from images around an African tribal fire, to butterflies in flight, to a scene from a small Chinese village.

“It’s different when you find yourself placed in the middle of a group you would normally consider a minority,” says Fehsenfeld, referring to her experience of working on a boat with a full crew of Cantonese-speaking Chinese men. She went on to explain that one cannot truly understand a minority until a person has lived as one.

She learned that the men she served with on the boat had a radically different perception of her humor; often when she laughed they corrected her, letting her know that it was not a joke. Though she was technically an officer, she was not permitted to address any of the crewmen until they had first said good morning to her, due to the cultural protocol requiring women to wait to be addressed by men.
