Kenyetta Dance Company; American Cabaret Theatre, Nov. 10-11
Kenyetta is currently the most electrifying Indianapolis dance company, marked by graceful fluidity, clarity of intention and character development, and thoughtfully conceived story-centered choreography by Nicholas A. Owens. Eleven pre-professional dancers move from the emotional core of music with infectious energy. The straightforward quality of their technique is well-paired to the simple, yet sumptuous lines and fabric of their costumes. Nine new works swiftly yet memorably filled two hours. Sunday’s matinee included a special presentation of “South African Ballet, inspired by the stories of South African families who maintained their strength through the 2007 raging inferno.” This penetrating mini-drama could become a signature work. Ditto for “Children of Lights,” choreographed and danced by Owens and Gregory Manning on the theme, “We must remember to help one another.” www.kenyettadancecompany.com.
