Three and a half stars
Footlite Musicals; directed by Bill Hale

This enduring musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II reminds us war is hell and hating “the other” is a nasty trait “we’re carefully taught.” Rick Purvis rises to the emotional and vocal demands of Emile deBecque. His are the most poignant insights: “I know what you are against. What are you for?” Amy Douglas is an innocent Nelli, Andrew Reddick is an eager Lt. Cable, Agnes Shelton is a compelling Bloody Mary, R. Brian Noffke is a brazen Luther Billis. Men’s and women’s choruses are strong, as are all supporting cast members. Bill Hale directed with fine support from choreographer Kelly Price, costume designer Stephen R. Hollenbeck, scenic and lighting designer R. Brian Noffke and vocal director/conductor Kevin D. Smith. Through May 18; 317-926-6630, www.footlite.org.
