It was their day off when I spoke to Cameron Muncey, guitar player and vocalist in Australian rock band Jet. They were driving through Texas on the way to their next gig in Arizona as part of their 31-city U.S. tour.

“We came out [of Memphis] with a few bruises,” says Muncey. “Some people say going on tour is a crazy way of living. You live in a submarine together.” He adds that although touring artists may “walk away broken,” they still have a good time, and even on the off days, he would “stay out late, up past my bedtime.”

It’s been a while since Jet played in Indy. Muncey recalls the last show — a festival that “had a lot of Harley Davidsons.”

When asked about the Spiderman 3 soundtrack, which was released May 1, he says the featured song is called “Hanging About.” At least it sounds that way. His Australian accent mixed with a terrible cellular connection makes for a somewhat difficult interview. According to online sources, the song featured is actually called “Falling Star” and is previously unreleased.

Jet’s retro sound is clean, stylish and catchy. “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” the first single from their 2003 debut LP, Get Born, was a big part of their stardom in the U.S., especially as it was featured in the Apple iPod commercials. Just thinking of the tune will get it stuck in your head and possibly instill images of black silhouettes dancing on colorful backgrounds.

But this tour isn’t so much about Get Born and especially not iPods. It’s about Shine On, Jet’s most recent album that released in October. It’s different from their 2003 release in that it’s darker and more serious. It reflects what was going on in their lives at the time. The title track of the album is a tribute to Nic and Chris Cester’s father, who never smoked, but died of lung cancer during the recording of the album.
