Road Trip

Two and a half stars
Harrison Gallery; Harrison Center for the Arts

Road Trip strives to take us somewhere, perhaps anywhere except Indiana. Although First Friday activities such as tent pitching added to the vacation theme, a visit after opening night found the exhibition to be uneven. “Dwelling,” Tré Reising’s installation, reviewed last June at Alchemy art + aesthetics, fills half the front gallery, yet seems confined. Reising’s revamped village-like display of burlap tents on mulch, surrounded with “Space Drawing” — stretched yarn arranged in wall patterns or through spaces — is still strong, but was better suited for Alchemy’s elongated gallery. There, the environment created was of another place or time. Road Trip includes paintings by Amy Reel, Matthew Eickhoff and Denise Charboneau-Eickhoff and photographs by Mary Beth Jackson and Brandon Bush. The Eickhoffs also created a video of their recent Western vacation, but the video was not playing, leaving the back gallery sparse. Then there’s Jackson’s digital color photograph, “Road Trip No. 3, Lesotho.” Shot through a windshield, the focus is on a pickup truck, its bed heaped with luggage and possessions, and it’s a moment away from a curve and guardrail. Does the truck veer into the African shrubs and foothills or follow the road? Now I am taken away. Through March 29; 317-396-3886, www.harrisoncenter.org.
