Web update: Republicans name Carson challenger
by Laura McPhee Jul 18, 2008

Republicans have announced the results of the party caucus to replace Jon Elrod on the November ballot.

Elrod dropped out of the race last month, deciding to remain in the Indiana House of Representatives rather than continue his campaign against Andre Carson.

Late today, Republicans announced that Gabrielle Campo, an Indianapolis social worker, has been selected as the Republican candidate in the 7th Congressional District. Campo won on the second ballot with 40 of the caucus' 77 votes.

According to the press release, Campo will focus on issues "that matter to the citizens of Marion County, including energy and education."

"Gabrielle is young, energetic and capable of waging a spirited challenge against Andre Carson," 7th Congressional District Republican Chairman John Hammond said.

Patrick O'Connor was second in the voting with 18 votes, Ray Irvin tallied 15, and Kevin Green finished with 2.

Welcome to the world of Nuvo. McPhee calls it an "exclusive" when all other media outlets in Indianapolis had the story days before. We all knew it was going to be Campo. Where is the exclusive? Nuvo is getting to be more and more like Fox News. As long as they report it, it's an "exclusive." God, this city need another alternative news weekly in the worst way. Maybe "Kevin the Pimp" will sell his shell of a newspaper to a credible news organization with well-seasoned reporters. Or at least with a news editor that has something other than a degree in French Literature.

I can't help but notice that even the headline of the article ABOUT the Republican candidates' nomination does not mention her by name, but does mention Carson. Hmmm....
