Web update: Republicans name Carson challenger
Republicans have announced the results of the party caucus to replace Jon Elrod on the November ballot.
Elrod dropped out of the race last month, deciding to remain in the Indiana House of Representatives rather than continue his campaign against Andre Carson.
Late today, Republicans announced that Gabrielle Campo, an Indianapolis social worker, has been selected as the Republican candidate in the 7th Congressional District. Campo won on the second ballot with 40 of the caucus' 77 votes.
According to the press release, Campo will focus on issues "that matter to the citizens of Marion County, including energy and education."
"Gabrielle is young, energetic and capable of waging a spirited challenge against Andre Carson," 7th Congressional District Republican Chairman John Hammond said.
Patrick O'Connor was second in the voting with 18 votes, Ray Irvin tallied 15, and Kevin Green finished with 2.
