Randy Creep: 1989 punk
by Jeff Napier Nov 21, 2007

You don’t have to dig too deep to uncover legendary Randy Creep stories: They include stink-bombs in White Castles, firearms on stage that may or may not have been loaded, selling buttons for the Cars and hanging out with everybody from Blondie to Steve Earle. Creep was among the first handful of Indianapolis kids who heard the call of punk, and he helped start Indiana’s first punk band, The Latex Novelties.

Later on, Creep was possibly the first guy in the world to have the vision of pairing up country with reggae, something that Willie Nelson didn’t try to do until more than 20 years later. That band, the Rastabilly Rebels, enjoyed immense popularity in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Towards the end of the last decade, he moved back to his roots with gritty New York City punkers the Baldwicks.

Nowadays, Creep can be found on the Eastside of Indy, selling NASCAR collectibles at the Liberty Bell Flea Market. Recent plans to reunite the Rastabilly Rebels were derailed when, in typical Creep fashion, he was hit by a mail truck and flipped into a ditch. He escaped unharmed but developed laryngitis soon afterwards. Turns out, he slipped some discs and pinched a nerve that paralyzed his vocal chords.

Now that he’s getting better, things are starting to look up for Creep. A reconstituted Rastabilly Rebels lineup that also includes Thom Woodard, Mark Cutsinger and Bruce Stuckey is set to start spreading the Jah love again, and, as The Latex Novelties have enjoyed a cultish resurgence of interest in Europe and on eBay, a label in Italy has just released a vinyl reissue of a Latex Novelties LP, A Girl’s Best Friend. If all goes well, a European tour could be waiting in the wings. Looks like it’s going to take a lot more than the U.S. Postal Service to stop Randy Creep.

Among the most memorable shows I’ve seen all year, the exhibition lives up to its claims: There’s nothing sweet about it -- and yet the work is, almost...
