Querrey wins first round
Eighteen-year old American Sam Querrey accepted a wild card to play in the RCA Championship two weeks ago. It took him two hours to win his first round.
Querrey wound up the match in the fifth hour of Round 1 play on Center Court, defeating Janko Tipsarevic (SCG) 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-4.
Fans showed no grief in the length of the match. As they sat at the edge of their seats, they set off a wave of claps to welcome the players to the courts between sets.
Querrey, who just turned professional in May of 2006,told the crowd that his first win left him “pretty tired.”
During the match, Tipsarevic challenged a baseline call which resulted in his favor after viewing the new instant replay technology.
Querry will now take on Fernando Gonzalez in Round 2 tomorrow on Center Court at 12:30.
Doubles team, Paul Hanley (AUS) and Kevin Ullyett (ZIM), also defeated the team of Hyung-Taik Lee (KOR) and Nicolas Mahut (FRA) in a match tiebreak with scores of 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.
