On Our Journeys

Three and a half stars
Through May 31

Six artists’ works are currently on display at Editions Limited. Nestled in the heart of Broad Ripple, Editions Limited’s On Our Journeys show features an array of worthwhile artists and mediums. Thomas Burke paints in the master plein-air style – his landscapes are rich and lush, his strokes heavy and final. Harkening the expressionist style, the artist’s own sensibility and connection with nature comes to live on the canvas. The diptych “Yellow Heat 1 & 2” features a winding dirt road flanked by a firey bush. The colors saturate and the artist’s strokes flow in Burke’s works. Marla Bagetta’s “An Offering” is in a similar painterly tradition. Her strokes are exuberantly thick, flowing horizontally across the canvas, ultimately playing with the spacial relationship of the viewing planes. Eric Laffer’s “Longitude and Latitude” is informed by the simplicity of the map.  Topographical lines jut across the canvas, bisecting with design and industrial elements to create a grid system for the viewer to explore. Joyce McCarten’s “Sunspot” is a jolt of just that – sunshine. Vivid yellow and brilliant orange saturate the canvas while artist’s impastoed strokes give texture and substance to the work.
