New Impossibilities
Yo-Yo Ma, cello; The Silk Road Ensemble;Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Sony Classical
Four and a half stars
Chicago gave itself a precious gift when it welcomed the Silk Road Project for a year-long residency. The concerts sampled on this disc were the culmination of their visit, so hilarious tracks like “The Song of Eight Unruly Tipsy Poets” are appropriately joyful. But Kayhan Kalhor’s passionate “The Silent City” is
just as likely to make you weep.
