Muncie is a college town; there’s no doubt about it. One of the symptoms of such is great bands. Many of Muncie’s musicians graduate college and move to the “big city,” but that doesn’t mean the music dies. While Muncie may have lost Everthus the Deadbeats and Everything, Now! to such a fate, this “Middletown” still has a strong local music scene churning out great bands.

Nothing could make it clearer than the newly created Muncie MusicFest.

Local promoter Graham Watson, who runs TheMuncieScene.com, along with Doc’s Music Hall owner Mike Martin and Cheryl Crowder of Muncie Downtown Development have put their heads together and created the multistage music festival that will take over downtown Muncie on Saturday, Sept. 8.

The fest ranges across five bars and three outdoor stages. The lineup features bands from all over Indiana. Besides Muncie faves like twee-pop quartet Arrah and the Ferns (yes, they added a bass player), indie rockers Hollis Mason (former Dirty Steps and Lou Reeds), the tiny orchestra called This Story and the solid rock sounds of The Spitshine, Indy bands Grampall Jookabox, Big Bang Static, pop-punk/ska band Highway Magic, piano pop classic Wolfy and hip-hop artists Mic Sol and Black Soil Project will also perform.

Maggie Kubley will venture from her new home in Chicago to perform two 15-minute sets at the Arts Garden Stage in her former college town.
