MIA letters
by Letter to the Editor Mar 26, 2008

I agree with Steve Hammer that the new Star cares much more about its advertisers than its readers (Hammer, “Yes, Indy Does Matter,” March 12-19). I made two attempts to get letters printed in The Star concerning the negative impact of the so-called Telecom reform law passed in 2006 by the Legislature. I even contacted Editor Dennis Ryerson, to no avail. According to Cecil Bohannon, senior fellow in the Digital Policy Institute at Ball State University, the law caused telecommunication companies to hire or say they will hire 2,000 additional workers in Indiana and he bizarrely compared it to less need for apple pickers in a column in The Star. He also said the fact that AT&T partially paid for his favorable study about the telecom law did not influence its results. I think the fact that The Star has published little if any criticism of the new law or investigated its impact tells all we need to know about the current publisher because every week in The Star, you will find profitable full page ads from Horizon, AT&T, Dish Network with its alliance with AT&T and Comcast and Bright House cable operators.
