Musical Family Tree Songwriter Showcase w/ Richard Edwards, Christian Taylor, Carl Broemel, The Sheds

The venerable Musical Family Tree Web site, which archives the sounds of Indiana bands old and new, will host an event showcasing some of the most popular talents the region has to offer. The performers at Friday night’s show will include Richard Edwards of Margot and the Nuclear So & So’s, Christian Taylor of America Owns The Moon, Carl Broemel of Old Pike and the Sheds, a duo from Covington, Ky.

Edwards and his big band, the So and So’s, need little introduction to an Indianapolis crowd. The group has been one of Indy’s greatest rock success stories in recent memory, garnering nationwide acclaim and major label deals. For those who don’t know, Edwards is the chief songwriter for the Margot clan, who plays a very straightforward and tuneful kind of jangly indie-rock.

Taylor, of the now defunct America Owns The Moon, is an interesting case as a solo performer. Since the breakup of his longtime band, he has been performing intriguing solo acoustic shows, where he displays rich vocal and performance style. The Clash meets Robert Johnson is the best way to describe it. Taylor’s performances, sans rock band, also display his excellent songwriting chops that could often be buried by the volume of America Owns the Moon’s sound.

Broemel is one of the founders of Old Pike, a longtime classic rock outfit from Bloomington. Old Pike often drew comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp and other blue-collar songwriters, though the band has been quiet since Sony released their album, Ten Thousand Nights, in 1999.
