Loving The Latex Novelties
by Jeff Napier Aug 1, 2007
Flying the freak flag for a new generation
Down in a basement in downtown Indianapolis, a ghost is being reborn. The Latex Novelties, the very first punk rock band ever to appear in Indianapolis, is practicing for its first proper gig in more than 20 years this coming Saturday at Punk Rock Night in the Melody Inn.
The reformed band is tearing through “Just Meat” and is nailing it spectacularly when I show up. The Mysterious Mango is wigging out on atonal, yet catchy guitar lines, while the other guitarist, Greg Knox, spars with him across the cramped space. Drummer Davey Cretin and bassist Gregory Dean hold down a kinetic rhythm, while young-blood Justin Allen, formerly of The Slurs and The Mighty John Waynes, spits out lyrics as if he was born to be there.
The loss of founding brothers Peter Pills and Mo Geek made a reunion of Indy’s first punkers a highly unlikely and dubious possibility, but late last year, shortly after winning the Joey Ramone Lifetime Achievement Award at the Punk Rock Night Awards, an Italian record label released the Novelties’ first LP, A Girl’s Best Friend, in Europe and sold out all 5,000 of the initial run in short order.
Since then, other offers for record releases in the U.S. and abroad have been pouring in, as well as requests for tours and merchandise. To top it all off, filmmaker Keith Parker included their song, “Born to Destroy,” in his new indie film, Shadow People. The remaining members of the band, who had all played in one or more of the three previous incarnations of The Latex Novelties, knew it was time to do something. Eight months later, they are back in all their splendor.
The catalyst was Allen, who is a dead ringer for the legendary Pills. “When we originally set out to do this, we couldn’t have asked anyone to like, OK, ‘sing like Pills.’ That would have been wrong and unfair,” Cretin says. “But when Justin came in, he couldn’t help but nail the stuff. It’s just the way he’s wired.”
It also helps that Allen is one of only a handful of performers who could hold his own in a band notorious for outrageous costumes and deranged stage antics.
“Knox asked me to do one or two songs, and I told him I would have to do the whole set or I wouldn’t do it,” Allen says. “One of the real reasons I wanted to be in this band was [because] they do have staying power. All the songs tell a story. It isn’t just ‘Piss on that … raise two middle fingers in the air and raise the anarchy flag and then do nothing.’”
Cretin interjects, “The important thing is not just that Justin is like Pills, but he comes in and adds something new and modern to the songs. Our songs stand the test of time, but we’re not going after the people who were around in 1979, we’re after a new breed of punk rockers. Justin’s stage presence and voice is the key to that.”
Dean adds, “Plus, when I heard that he had taken a shit on the toilet at CBGB’s I thought to myself, ‘That’s my kind of guy.’ I mean, I’ve been in that bathroom. That takes some balls!”
Hook-filled songs like “High Cost of Living” and “We Don’t Wanna Go Home” were foreign to the Central Indiana landscape of the latter half of the ’70s, yet they attracted a group of similarly minded folks and paved the way for bands like The Zero Boys and Toxic Reasons. Fact is, any present Indianapolis band that gets up on a stage with a set of original songs owes a debt to The Latex Novelties.
“When we first started, it was so hard for us, because all there was in Indianapolis was cover bands, and nobody really cared about some band doing this early-NYC kinda glam rock stuff,” Cretin says. “Now, it’s the norm for a local band to do a set of all original songs. It’s all come full circle. We still have Mango’s songs, and now we have Justin Allen out front delivering the goods. Really, things could not have come together more perfectly.”

Comments on Loving The Latex Novelties
Thanks to Jeff Napier for taking interest and writing the article.

It was great to see people like Gary Indiana and so many more at a packed Melody Inn.
Geek, Pills, Creep, Jeff Bugby and Tom & Mimi were certainly missed.
Mannon's punker gems were delivered killerly by Justin Allen. Peter Pills would agree. Nostalgia had little to do with this performance, save it for the coffee table book.
Unfortunately, for some people to be aware of this show, it would have required buying commercial time on the Cartoon Channel. Gotta work on that one.
It was a great night of punkrock, we look forward to playing in Indianapolis again sometime soon.

Not a Grandpa? Just a poser!

Sorry little man, but the Latex Novelties paid their dues long before most of you alleged "punks" were born. You weren't there so you must just be ignorant and shooting off at the mouth. Punk gear was made from thrift store women's departments and cast offs. There was no "Hot Topic" so your mom can get you your new school clothes.
The Tubes said it best: "I Was a Punk Before You Were a Punk!" If you even know who the Tubes are go listen to the whole song. Until you have the credentials the Novelties have you will always be a poser and a wannabe. I hear Hot Topic has a sale on saggy "punk" pants. Better see if your mom will drive you down there.

Missing Novelties
by Cretin | Aug 14, 2007
Wanna know the skinny on why Tufty and Creep were not a part of the reunion?
Tufty was asked more than once to be a part of the reunion and politely refused with no hard feelings. He's welcome to play with the band any time, as is Creep. Tufty would certainly have said something if he had any strong feelings. He has no problem with the band playing at his own club, so that should tell you something. Maybe you should ask him if this is true.
Creep wanted to be the lead singer and would not or could not learn his bass parts. He became angry when he was told that the band did not want him to hire a stand in for him. It gets uglier than that but there's no way I'm airing laundry.
Despite waiting MONTHS for him to cool down he simply could not stop grinding the ax. He approached members of Toxic Reasons and who knows who else about playing the songs (written by other people) while he sang. They all turned him down. I wonder why? Maybe those closest see things the clearest. Remember that Creep was not the singer, Pills was.
Everyone in the band wishes Pills and Mo had survived. Anyone that thinks it doesn't hurt still is a moron.
The sad thing is that this past spring the band sold over 5000 albums in Europe in 7 weeks, have an American label and now this kind of thing rears its head. The band didn't ignore Creep or tell him to go away. He did it on his own.
THAT is the truth!

Tom,
Yes, I knew all the dirty-dirty going into this. And trust me when I say Creep and Tufty are two local heroes to me that I have mega-respect for. However, I also have respect for this line-up of the Latex boyz and so as a writer, I decided to put personal politics aside and write it from the perspective that Justin Allen was breathing some new life into a local legend. Creep and Tufty have nothing to do with this incarnation, so why should I drag them into it?
oh, and Gary, Redneck bands have their purpose. At least I'm not jerking my gerkhin over some Arcade Fire B.S.
hehe,

uhhh Tom, my understanding is that the previous reunion show was cancelled coz Creep gotta snit, he wanted to be lead singer. Snit continues, thus no Creep. That's show biz. Band politics has always baffled me, personally.

I know most of the players in this version of Latex Novelties has been in the band over the years. Anyone who supported and watched the Latex Novelties during its heyday at Crazy Als (now The Jazz Kitchen) know that Peter Pills, Mo Geek and the still living Randy "Creep" Ferguson were the driving force of that band. Mango and Tufty were the other key members.
To not have Randy Creep apart of this performance is nonesense. What is really disapointing is that there is no mention of Randy in the article nor the role Tufty played. Without Randy Creep and his now departed cousins, and I am sure Greg and Greg and Mango would agree, their would never have been a Latex Novelties in the first place.
Let me rant on more point....I understand that Randy did not even no of the show until someone called hime and mentioned the Nuvo article.
You would think at the age of all involved, there would be a little more class than this.
At first when I herd today, via Tufty that this show was going on, I was disappointed that I would be missing it....not now, I will enjoy my weekend at Lollapalooza in Chicaga.....
p.s. --- Jeff, you knew some of this right? hmmmm
