• Minneapolis six- and 12-string fingerstyle guitarist Michael Young is making stops at a couple coffee shops this weekend, performing on Friday, Jan. 18 at The Bean Cup (8908 S. St. Peter St.) at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 19 at Lazy Daze (10 Johnson Ave.) at 10:30 a.m. Young, who was born in Hibbing, Minn. (one of Bob Dylan/Zimmerman’s childhood homes), has been favorably compared to avant-garde guitarist Leo Kottke; like Kottke, he draws on folk, jazz, blues and classical influences for his mostly instrumental tunes.
• The life of Bloomington musician Evan Farrell will be celebrated on Sunday, Jan. 20 at a benefit concert at Bloomington’s Bluebird Nightclub. The concert begins at 5 p.m. with a screening of short films starring Farrell, followed by performances by The Hollows, Kentucky Nightmare, Thousand Arrows, Golden Gram, Drakkar Sauna, Crooked Country, Marrie Sloan and Toby from Crooked Country and The Japonize Elephants. Admission to the concert is by an open donation, with all proceeds benefiting the family of Evan Farrell.
